Heat sealing mini foil and air filled foil and how to do it correctly. Tips on how to secure a good seal and why mini foils are so important to our designs.
Using air filled designs with mini foils in your displays can really give that wow factor. They add perceived value on your display. They are very versatile and can be used in small displays and arches.
Some foil balloons are made with self-sealing valves and others which have no valves will need to be heat sealed. Balloons without valves also called air filled or mini foil balloons will need to be heat sealed once they have been inflated. These balloons do not have enough gas capacity to float. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes starting from 4” to 14 “
How does a heat sealer work?
The heat sealer contains a wire which is covered by a non-stick layer, you place the foil on the top of the heat strip and press down to seal.
Professionals generally use heat sealers to seal the balloons, some people use flat curling irons, but to get a nice strong seal we recommend investing in a balloon foil heat sealer. A lot of balloon professionals say they struggle with getting consistent results with heat sealing, so here are some tips to help you achieve this.
Instructions on using a heat sealer:
1) Turn on the heat sealer and choose a low setting
2) Inflate the balloon with a hand pump while pinching the neck of the balloon around the
tip of the pump
3) Pump until fully inflated
4) Insert the neck of the balloon between the lever of the heat sealer
5) Press down and hold the leaver closed until the light goes out on the side of the sealer
6) Realise the lever and remove the balloon. Once you have removed the foil it will remain inflated
Some balloon artists add another seal just under the first seal to give the balloon that extra seal.
Other balloon artists do the first seal then drag the remainder of the foil neck through. This gives it a longer area to seal.
